Asian Handicap

The Asian handicap is a market that we will find in all the bookmakers that operate in the world.

What is the Asian handicap (AH)

The Asian handicap bets come from Indonesia and have a very peculiar characteristic: the favorites to win in a specific market of a sporting event start with a handicap, that is, with a disadvantage that diminishes their favoritism.

Sometimes, the handicap equals both the contenders that the quotas established by the bookmakers are the same or similar.

Markets with Asian handicap (AH)

We will show you how the Asian handicap works with an example of football.

Imagine that Real Madrid and Apoel Nicosia play in the Santiago Bernabéu, in a match of the group stage of the Champions League. Madrid is clear favorite to win, so the handicap set by the bookmakers, to equal the odds, is R. Madrid -3.5 / Apoel +3.5.

How would the bets be resolved?

If you bet in favor of R. Madrid -3.5 goals, you will win the bet provided the whites win the match by a difference of 4 goals or more. Otherwise, you will lose it.
However, if you bet in favor of Apoel +3,5, you will win the bet whenever Madrid wins by 3 goals or less, draw or lose. Otherwise, you will lose the bet.

In the main sports (football, tennis, basketball) we can find several betting formats with Asian handicap. The most frequent are the margin of victory and those of over/under goals (football), games (tennis) or points (basket).

How and when to use the Asian handicap

Asian handicap bets are often used when there is a very favorite team and the odds for their victory are very low. The handicap assigned equals the odds, which makes the bets more attractive. Of course, betting on markets with a handicap has to change the chip a bit, because it is no longer a matter of guessing if a team is going to win a game. Rather, it is about knowing how many goals, points or games the team will win, or how many goals, points or games there will be in that match.

Types of bets with Asian handicap

Asian handicap bets can be of various types. These are the most frequent:

+0.

If the team we’ve bet on wins, we’ll take the bet.
If he loses, we lose the bet.
If there is a tie, the bet is null and the money is returned.

+0.5

If the team we have bet on wins or ties, we take the bet.
If the team that we have bet loses, we lose the bet.

Asian handicap bets are an interesting market when there is a clear favorite and the simple winner odds of an event are very low. Usually, they are a good market to find bets for value.

Asian handicap and European handicap

If you browse a bit through the bookmakers, you will see that there are markets for two types of handicaps, Asian and European.

We show you how they work and what their differences are with an example of football.

Imagine that Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are going to play at the Santiago Bernabéu. The handicap is R. Madrid -1 / FC Barcelona +1. You decide to bet on Real Madrid.

These would be the results of your bet on the Asian handicap according to the final score of the match:

If R. Madrid wins by 2 goals or more, you win the bet.
If R. Madrid wins by 1 goal, the bet is tied and the amount is returned.
If R. Madrid draws or loses, you lose the bet.

Now, we see how the results of your bet would be with the European handicap, according to the final score of the match:

If R. Madrid wins by 2 goals or more, you win the bet.
If R. Madrid wins by 1 goal, you lose the bet.
If R. Madrid draws or loses, you lose the bet.

As you can see, the difference is that in the European handicap, the victory of R. Madrid by 1 goal does not imply the return of the bet, something that does happen with the Asian.
