Tennis Betting – Clijsters to make class tell in Doha

October 25, 2010 | In: Articles

Caroline Wozniacki goes into the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships in Qatar having finally fulfilled her ambition to become world number one and the draw for the group stages has given the young Dane every chance of progressing to the semi-finals. Injuries to the Williams sisters, particularly Serena, has no doubt aided Wozniacki’s cause though, to be fair, she has won six times on the WTA Tour this year including the China Open in Beijing earlier this month. The new world number one has been drawn alongside Francesca Schiavone, Elena Dementieva and Sam Stosur in the Maroon Group in Doha and has been installed as 15/8 favourite for tournament success by Victor Chandler. Schiavone is a 16/1 chance with Stan James but she would have to be respected if returning to the form which saw her defeat Stosur (14/1 with Stan James and Ladbrokes) in the French Open final in June. Dementieva started the season strongly with wins in Sydney and Paris but she’s been way below her best lately and is given a 25/1 quote by Victor Chandler. The White Group is arguably the more competitive of the two with US Open champion Kim Clijsters set to face Jelena Jankovic, Vera Zvonareva and Victoria Azarenka. The latter won last week’s Kremlin Cup in Moscow to seal her place in the $1.5million season finale for the second year in succession and comes into the tournament as one of the form players. She’s now won twice on the WTA tour in 2010 and seems to have largely answered questions about her fitness (the Belarusian collapsed in the US Open and also dropped out of the China Open) and can be backed at a general 6/1. Clijsters is a best 5/2 to go on to win the tournament with Victor Chandler, while Zvonareva is quoted at 13/2 by Ladbrokes and Jankovic is widely available at 33/1. Azarenka should enjoy the faster surface in Qatar and could easily reach the final but Clijsters is undoubtedly the class act and, if still in the mood after a long season, is worth a tentative vote.
