Emelec coach Omar Asad has confirmed that he will be returning to Argentine football to take over the vacant post at San Lorenzo, despite strenuous denials from officials at the Ecuadorian club.
‘El Turco’, 40, has a burgeoning reputation as a coach in South America, enhanced in 2010 when he took Mendozan club Godoy Cruz to their first ever Copa Libertadores campaign. He walked out on the Tomba at the end of the Apertura due to a contract dispute but has continued his excellent work in Guayaquil; Emelec are now five points clear at the top of the Primera Fase after downing Liga de Quito away from home on Wednesday evening.
Coach-less San Lorenzo for their part announced the hiring of Asad from May 24 as their new tecnico, confirmed by president Carlos Abdo in a press conference on Wednesday evening.
“We have finished the negotiations and [on Thursday] the board will finalise the hiring of Omar Asad. We had our first informal chat on Sunday and on Wednesday by midday we were able to agree the terms of a one-year contract,” the chief announced.
Asad’s first match as Cuervo coach would be a clash against Arsenal de Sarandi in the Nuevo Gasometro in the 16th round of fixtures in the 2011 Clausura.
